Longley - Amorette

A telegram from Fort Scott, Kan., today announced the death of Mrs. Amorette S. Longley. She was well known in this city having often visited her daughter, Mrs. T. H. B. McCain.
Lafayette Call of Wednesday: Mrs. Amaretta S. Longley died at Fort Scott, Kansas, yesterday, aged about 75 years. Deceased was one of the pioneer residents of Lafayette, her first husband, Joseph Lawrence, being one of the prominent carpenters here up until about 1850. After Mr. Lawrence’s death, she continued to reside here with her little family. More than thirty years ago she married Rev. Abner H. Longley, a Universalist minister, and pastor of the church here, who died some years ago in Kansas. Since his death Mrs. Longley had been residing with her children at Fort Scott. She was one of the prominent women of Lafayette in its early day, and will be kindly remembered by our old citizens. She was a consistent Christian and an earnest worker in the Universalist Church. The remains will be taken to Dayton for interment. Services by Rev. T. B. Luster. Mrs. T. H. B. McCain of Crawfordsville and Mrs. D. H. Olive of Lebanon, the one a stepdaughter and the other an own daughter of deceased, came over today to attend the funeral, and are the guests of friends in the city. The remains arrived on the 3 o’clock train east-bound this afternoon and will be taken to Dayton by the 6:52 train tomorrow morning, where the interment will take place. The remains were attended by her daughter, Mrs. Mary (Lawrence) McLaughlin, and son, Gemo Lawrence.
